What exactly is Windows 7 and how do you customise it ?

July 18th, 2012 Comments off

Windows 7 is the one of the most popular operating systems around the world. Windows 7 was introduced 4 years back by Microsoft corporation. It has lot of features compared to the previous operating system Windows Vista.

How To Customize It?
Windows 7 provides many features which allow you to customize your computer and truly make it your own. Having your own, customized working environment allows you to express yourself and boost your productivity. For the most part, Windows 7 provides pretty much the same customization features as those that Windows Vista users will be familiar with, but there are some changes and additions. One of the most significant additions with Windows 7 customization is the introduction of desktop slideshows with various free, third-party utilities, you can even take Windows 7 customization a step further, changing things such as the log-on screen or the start button design. Follow the guides below to learn how to make your desktop unique!

1# Changing the Desktop Background:

Changing the desktop background is one of the most basic customizations and it’s something that users have been able to do since the earliest versions of Windows. With Windows 7, however, it is now possible to select desktop slideshows. You can even create your own with just a few clicks of the mouse. This is especially handy if you want your desktop background to change automatically without having to manually select a new picture every time you get bored with the old one.

To change your desktop background, right-click on the desktop and click “Personalize.” You can select from a variety of themes by clicking on the available thumbnails and then waiting for the selected theme to load. Be warned, however, that changing the theme will also change the sound scheme, window border colors screensaver and, in some cases, desktop icons. If you want to change only the desktop background, click the “Desktop Background” icon at the bottom of the window.

Click “Browse” beside “Picture location” and browse to the location containing the pictures that you want to use for your desktop slideshow. For best results make sure that the pictures you use have the same aspect ratio as your monitor and, ideally the same or higher resolution. You can then manually select the pictures you want to use in the slideshow by checking the boxes beside the thumbnails. If you don’t want to use a slideshow and, instead, want to use a single image, just select one image.

Finally, choose the picture position from the drop-down box in the bottom-left corner and choose how frequently you want the image to change. Placing a check in the “Shuffle” box will make the images from the slideshow appear randomly each time. Click “Save changes” when you’re done and close the personalization window.

2# Changing Window Borders and Colors
Many customization changes were introduced with the interface overhaul in Windows XP and these have been advanced further in the latest versions of Windows. With support for transparency and various other visual effects, you can now customize the appearance of windows, its borders and the taskbar in a variety of ways.

While there is only one Aero visual style included with Windows 7, it’s still possible to choose your own color scheme. To do this, right-click on the desktop and click “Personalize.” Click on the button “Window Color.” There are 16 presets to choose from and clicking on one of them will cause the changes to take effect immediately. If you want to choose a different color, click on the arrow beside “Show color mixer” and move the sliders until you get the color you want. Choose how bright or dark the color is by moving the slider beside “Color intensity.”
If you find that all of the visual effects are bogging down your computer and making it run slowly, you might want to consider deselecting the box beside “Enable transparency.” When you’re satisfied, click “Save changes” and close the control panel.
